Choosing the Perfect Location for a Maternity Photo Shoot

One of the biggest factors to consider when planning a maternity shoot is the location. Whilst you can always have it at home or at our studio, an outdoor location is also worth considering if you want to do something a little different and make sure your maternity photo album is truly stunning. With this in mind, we thought we would jot down a few pointers for couples who are looking to create a maternity and newborn photo album that is unique and that will take one’s breath away again and again.

What Makes the Perfect Location

There are a number of points you need to consider when choosing the location of your photo shoot, all of which will play a part in deciding how memorable your pictures are.

  • Lighting – One of the reasons that many professional maternity photographers enjoy shooting at outdoor locations is because they offer such a wide variety of lighting conditions. Even a single location will provide different lighting depending on the time of day that you arrange your shoot so it is worth visiting potential locations at different times to make sure you are aware of everything they have to offer.
  • Special Meaning – Some couples have a special connection with certain locations, whether it be the place they shared their first kiss, where the proposal took place or somewhere from their own childhood that they have always loved. While it is certainly not obligatory to choose a location with which you already have a connection, it can help to set the mood for some beautiful shots.
  • Practicality – You may not wish to make any compromises when it comes to creating a beautiful maternity and newborn photo album but unless money really is of no object, you will have to consider how practical the locations you are thinking of using really are. A sunset beach shoot on an island in the South Pacific would almost certainly be spectacular but the costs involved in setting up such a shoot would be prohibitive for all but the wealthiest of couples. On the other hand, if you are not concerned with cost, please do not let us limit your imagination! We are more than happy to travel for special locations if that is what you desire.
  • Shade – Shade is really considered with lighting as far as most professional maternity photographers are concerned but we think it deserves a special mention because many locations that may at first appear to be ideal, such as a wide, sandy beach, sometimes offer little in the way of shade to break up the pictures and make them more interesting. If you want photos with more depth and interesting shadows, a wooded area or even a city centre location could be more suitable.
